If you are staying in Kovalam or Varkala and want a quick experience of the classic houseboat experience without travelling to Alappuzha, the Kollam backwaters around Ashtamudi Lake offers a smaller and quieter version.

This is the best luxury small boat in the area and features a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom, a bow day cabin with dining area and upper deck for privacy. 

The boat cruises from Kollam in Ashtamudi and the smaller backwaters that feed the lake and you will sleep near the Lake before returning back to the jetty in the morning.
